Viewing a property: the questions to ask before you decide

A practical list of questions that reveal the real condition of a property during a viewing: heating, damp, monthly costs and neighbours.

Nice photos are not enough. A viewing is your one chance to see a property as it really is, so make the most of it.

Before the visit

  • Ask for the exact size, the floor and the year of construction.
  • Ask whether it is available right away and who the owner is.
  • Book a daytime slot so you can judge the natural light.

Inside the property

  • Heating: central, gas or electric? Roughly how much did it cost last winter?
  • Damp: look at ceiling corners, behind wardrobes and around windows. Dark patches or a musty smell deserve a question.
  • Windows and doors: open and close them and check the insulation.
  • Water and electricity: run the taps, watch the pressure and ask how old the installations are.
  • Noise: listen to the street, the neighbours and the lift.

About the building and costs

  • What are the monthly shared building charges and what do they cover?
  • Are major repairs planned, such as the roof or the façade?
  • Where is parking, and is a space guaranteed?

After the visit

Write your notes straight away and take photos if allowed. Compare calmly with other options before any commitment or deposit.

Our team can join you at the viewing, ask these questions for you, and send a detailed video if you are outside Sarajevo.
