Furnished or unfurnished? A tenant's guide in Sarajevo

When you search for an apartment to rent in Sarajevo you will find both types. The choice depends on how long you will stay and what furniture you already own.

Furnished

• A good fit if: you are staying a few months or a year, or you have just arrived and do not want to buy furniture.
• Pay attention to: the quality of the bed, the kitchen and the washing machine, because you use them every day.
• Rent is often slightly higher, but you save the cost of buying and moving furniture.

Unfurnished

• A good fit if: you plan to stay long or already own furniture.
• It gives you freedom to arrange the home your way, and the rent may be lower.
• Ask: is the kitchen fitted with basic appliances, or completely empty?

The inventory list

Whatever the type, ask for a written list attached to the contract that names every item and its condition, with photos dated on the day you move in. This list protects you when the deposit is returned at the end.

Questions before signing

• Who pays if an appliance breaks down?
• Can you change or add furniture?
• What does the rent include: building charges, internet, heating?
