Your first month in Sarajevo: a practical checklist for families
From temporary housing and registering your stay to a phone number, schools and transport: steps that make a family's start easier.
AL SHAMSI Real Estate 3 days agoMoving to a new city with your family takes some organising. Here is a practical list of what you will need in your first weeks in Sarajevo.
Week one
- Temporary housing: start with a furnished apartment for a month or two, and get to know the neighbourhoods before a long commitment.
- Registering your stay: foreigners must register their address. Hotels usually do this; in an apartment, ask the owner or the authority for foreigners' affairs about the current procedure.
- SIM card and internet: available from local telecom operators, usually with your passport.
Weeks two and three
- Choosing the area: the centre is close to everything, while newer areas are quieter and roomier. Think about distance to school and work.
- Schools: there are local schools and international schools teaching in different languages. Visit them and ask about places and term dates.
- Bank account: ask the bank which documents non-residents or new residents need.
Week four
- Transport: trams and buses cover the city; a car helps for trips outside it and in winter.
- Healthcare: find your nearest clinic or hospital and check your health insurance.
- Daily shopping: you will find large supermarkets, neighbourhood shops and stores selling halal products.
