AL SHAMSI Real Estate 3 days agoSarajevo is surrounded by mountains and nature, and with a rental car you can discover a lot in a single day and still sleep in the city.
In and around Sarajevo
- Vrelo Bosne: a nature park in Ilidža at the springs of the Bosna river, great for walks and families.
- Mount Trebević: overlooks the city and can be reached by car or by cable car from near the Old Town.
The Olympic mountains
- Jahorina and Bjelašnica: both hosted events of the 1984 Winter Olympics. Skiing in winter, hiking and fresh air in summer.
- Lukomir: a traditional mountain village with stone houses on the Bjelašnica plateau. The road is a mountain road, so ask about its condition before you go.
South towards Herzegovina
- Konjic: a town on the green Neretva river, a lovely stop on the way.
- Mostar: the city of the Old Bridge, on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The drive takes about two hours or more depending on traffic, so set off early.
Driving tips
- In the cold season winter equipment is required, so check tyres and chains against the current rules.
- Mountain roads can be narrow and winding; allow extra time.
- Always carry the car papers and your licence, and ask about the conditions for leaving Bosnia if you plan to cross a border.
